Tutor of the Month

May 2017 – Bill Fiorentino

Bill Fiorentino is not only our Director of Treasury, he is also an amazing math tutor. He has his Master’s degree in International Finance and another degree in Project Management. He has been on the CLC team for eight years, tutoring young students through adult learners in any type of math they need instruction on. Bill has been instrumental in helping adult learners pass their GED tests. He also helps college students through their math courses, including accounting and finance.

Bill volunteers at our events and transports students when needed. He is all-around great guy and a tremendous asset to our organization!

 

March 2017 – Cara LaRose

Cara LaRose is a talented tutor who can work with students at every level, from beginning readers through college-level students. She is skilled at teaching math, reading, study skills, test prep, ESL (English as a second language) and many other subjects. She has helped countless students improve various skills and, therefore, their grades in school.   

Just last week, one of Cara’s high school students tested out three and a half grade levels higher in math than when she first started here a few months ago. 

 

 

February 2017 – Joan Saks

Joan Saks, our CLC Academy Teacher for the Kindergarten – 2nd grade class, has been a part of our team for about two years. She began as a Professional Tutor in our after-school program, working with elementary-aged children on basic reading, math and ESL (English as a Second Language). She has also worked as a counselor in our Summer Camp.

Joan is a fun-loving and effective CLC Academy instructor. She gets amazing products with her students and helps the kids understand the basics in life, including responsibility and help and why it is important to limit the time spent on TV and electronics. We are incredibly thankful to have Joan on our team!

 

January 2017 – Sandra Gaddy

 
Sandra Gaddy, our CLC Academy Assistant Teacher for the 3rd – 6th grade class, has been a part of the CLC team for over a year now. She began as a volunteer tutor in our Free Tutoring program on Saturdays and worked with her two grandchildren. Presently, she is working five days a week alongside Sharon Hillestad and is an invaluable member of our CLC Academy team of instructors. Sandra loves doing crafts and often adds fun arts and crafts activities to the kids’ academic schedule.

 

 

December 2016 – Sioux Hart

 
Sioux Hart, our Tutor Extraordinaire, has been working with students of all ages for years now. Her specialty is tutoring teens and adult students on all levels of math, reading, science, physics, English as a second language, GED prep, ACT/SAT test prep and more. Sioux also volunteers at our events and helps keep our Center looking fabulous by weeding the landscaping.

 

 

November 2016 – Sharon Hillestad

Sharon Hillestad, our 3rd – 6th grade teacher for Community Learning Center Academy and our CLC Director of Tutoring has amazing wins with her students. She has a strong purpose to help and her students make tremendous gains in their programs. 

Sharon also administers assessment testing for students, writes tutoring programs, recommends materials for the tutors and supervises the school and tutoring cycles.  Sharon has been an amazing Community Learning Center team member for decades and she is a tremendous asset for this organization!

 

 
 

March 2015 – Darlene Heinz and Pia Hopner

Darlene Heinz and Pia HopnerDarlene Heinz and Pia Hopner are motivated college students who are on a three-month work study to become teachers in Germany. Darlene plans to teach students in 5th through 10th grade and Pia plans to teach students in 1st through 4th grade. They have been wonderful volunteer tutors in our Homework Help program.

February 2015 – Tami Held

Jennifer Hernandez-Lopez and Tami HeldTami Held has been a tutor in our Professional program and our Homework Help Volunteer program for approximately one year now. She also ran our Morning Tutoring program and did a beautiful job getting the teenagers up to speed so that they could reenter middle school and high school or enter the work force. She is skilled at teaching several subjects including science, math, language arts, social studies and SAT prep. She works very well with children of all ages and she gets an amazing product every time.

January 2015 – Chris Auro

Chris Auro working with DagnyChris Auro has been a volunteer reading tutor for students in our Homework Help program. She has also been helping get gently-used children’s books donated for our Free Books and Art for Kids events each month.

December 2014 – Janine Vassall

Janine Vassall -croppedJanine Vassall is our new fun and energetic Director of Volunteer Services. She has been working with our students in our after-school homework help program. She has also been helping with administrative duties and events and she is getting ready to do public speaking engagements and fundraising for the Community Learning Center. Janine has a strong purpose for helping kids and she is a great addition to the CLC team.

November 2014 – Kendal Lucas

Kendal Lucas and student -croppedKendal Lucas has been a volunteer math tutor for the college students in our SAT prep program and other students who need help with math. He is working with one of our tutors to create a new SAT program that we can offer regularly at the Community Learning Center.

October 2014 – Tom Lynch

September 2014 – Simon Sotomayor

Simon Sotomayor and CLC adult student -croppedSimon Sotomayor has been a volunteer reading and writing tutor for the children in our Morning Tutoring Group and our after-school tutoring program. He has been helping the kids with Chess Club and Art Classes and he was a tremendous asset for our recent Making Good Choices Summer Camp. Simon also lends a hand for event set-up and minor clean-up around the Center.

July 2014 – David DeRousse

David DeRousse -croppedDavid DeRousse has been an excellent volunteer tutor for some time now. He began by tutoring a young boy in the neighborhood for over a year and now comes into the CLC two to three times a week to work on reading, math and geography with our students. David enjoys teaching new strategies to the children who attend our weekly Chess Club. He is also a monthly Student Sponsor at the Galileo level.

She has been a tutor with the Community Learning Center for approximately five years now. She helps promote our tutoring programs by passing out postcards to local parents. She has also been a Voting Maniac in all four of our contests.

He has been a tutor for approximately eight years with the Community Learning Center. He has been a Voting Maniac in all of our contests. Adam is also an annual sponsor of our Casino Night fundraiser.

February 2014 – Jancis Dienes

Jancis Dienes and CLC students -croppedJancis Dienes is our Tutor of the Month because she helps so many students in our Free Homework Help program. She has been a tutor in our professional and volunteer programs for three years now. Jancis has conducted math trainings for our tutors, as she has extensive knowledge about base ten blocks and other math concepts. She is also an author and volunteered to do the book reading at our February Free Books and Art for Kids event. Jancis just celebrated her 70th birthday and had her party at the CLC. Instead of collecting b-day presents, she asked that people donate to her two favorite children’s charities, the CLC and the Future of Haiti Org. Thanks for all of the help you give, for the time you invest in your students and the CLC and for your generosity, Jancis Dienes!  You are an amazing woman.
 

 

January 2014 – Rosalia Morandin

Rosalia Morandin is our Tutor of the Month because she helps so many of our students from Spanish-speaking families learn to read and do math. She has been a volunteer tutor for approximately 1 1/2 years now. She has helped with event promotion, fundraisers and receptionist duties for the last four years. She has been a Voting Maniac in all of our contests. She also helps translate all of our promotional materials in Spanish. Rosalia is a true asset to the CLC!

December 2013 – Susan Howat

Susan Howat and JessieSusan Howat has been a tutor in our professional and volunteer tutoring programs for approximately three years. She recently attended a parent-teacher conference to support one of her students. Susan is also working on getting her Director’s license to run a VPK (Voluntary Pre-K) program out of the CLC’s 1611 N Fort Harrison facility beginning this August 2014 and we are so excited about this!

November 2013 – Theresa Zeitz

Theresa ZeitzTheresa Zeitz has been a tutor in our professional and volunteer tutoring programs for a total of 8 years now. She is amazing and has helped a countless number of students become independent learners who understand how to study. Theresa is also working with students in our ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages) program.

Mary Kwapil came to the Community Learning Center approximately four months ago as an AARP volunteer and she has been helping us with volunteer tutoring, event promotion and call-in, updating information in our database, cleaning and organizing the Center and so much more.

September 2013 – Sioux Hart

Sioux Hart and PJSioux Hart has been one of the CLC’s amazing tutors for the past six years in our grant-funded and professional tutoring programs. Recently, she a volunteer tutor for an adult student named PJ who was at a 4th grade level when he began his tutoring program. Sioux tutored PJ for one hour every day Monday through Friday for over six months and PJ excelled rapidly. PJ graduated with his GED in August and is doing very well in life now thanks to Sioux’s tremendous effort and care.

Sioux has also been an incredible help with promoting CLC’s events and fundraisers and she was a Voting Maniac in the Pepsi, Chase, Citgo and Mary Kay contests. Thank you for all that you do for your students and for the CLC, Sioux Hart! You are sincerely appreciated.

Jane Dryer has been working with the Community Learning Center for the past three years. She has been a fabulous tutor in our grant-funded and professional tutoring programs. She also volunteers at our Books for Kids events.

July 2013 – Joan Pasco

_MG_7994Joan Pasco worked with the Community Learning Center for the past three years and ran the morning tutoring program. She was also a wonderful tutor in our grant-funded after-school program.

Joan and her husband Mal Pasco successfully ran a school called Back to Basics for 12 years. Joan was a marvelous educator.

Joan will be deeply missed and always remembered for her wonderful work with the students and families at the Community Learning Center.

April 2013 – Kayla McNealy and Alexia Singletary

Kayla McNealy (pictured on left above) and Alexia Singletary (pictured on right above) are our Community Learning Center tutors who have been participating in the Teens Tutoring with Technology program that is sponsored by Best Buy. They both completed extensive tutor training. Kayla then tutored a 5th grader for 20 hours and Alexia tutored a 2nd grader.  Both of their students did well with the tutoring and made measurable progress as a result! We appreciate all of your help and the time you devote to the CLC, Kayla and Alexia!

 

March 2013 – Jermaine and Sherrod Robinson

Jermaine Robinson and Sherrod Robinson have been tutors in our Teens Tutoring with Technology program that is sponsored by Best Buy. They both completed extensive tutor training and then tutored their three younger siblings.  All three children showed measurable progress in their reading as a result.  Thanks for all of your hard work and dedication to your students, Jermaine and Sherrod.

Rosalia Morandin has been a volunteer tutor during the Thursday night homework help sessions for six months. Rosalia has also volunteered to help promote our events and fundraisers over the last three years by making calls to our Spanish-speaking families. She has been on staff for three years as our receptionist and assistant tutor.

October 2012 – Mark Krajewski

Mark Krajewski has been a volunteer tutor during the Thursday night homework help sessions for six weeks now.  Mark began helping the CLC by becoming a Voting Maniac in the Chase contest!  He then offered to help upgrade our e-mail marketing program and integrate it with our social media accounts.  He is currently running a holiday card campaign that benefits the Community Learning Center and Youth For Human Rights.  We appreciate all of your help and the time you devote to the CLC, Mark Krajewski!
